London Dog Owners: Keep That Leash Handy or Your Wallet Will Feel the Bite
London's boroughs are getting stricter about where and when your furry friend can roam freely, with more areas requiring dogs to stay on their leashes - and hefty fines for those who don't follow the rules.
From Westminster to Hackney, Camden to Islington, councils across the capital have put in place special protection orders (PSPOs) that make sure our four-legged friends stay connected to their humans in certain spots. And they're not messing around with the penalties - let your pup run free in a must-leash zone and you could be looking at a £100 fine on the spot.
Think that's rough? If you don't pay up promptly, you could end up in court facing a whopping £1,000 penalty. Even former PM Rishi Sunak got a talking-to from the police when his dog Nova was spotted off-leash in Hyde Park!
The leash rules typically apply in places like cemeteries, near cafes, around outdoor gyms, and in smaller parks. In Hammersmith & Fulham, they'll cut you some slack if you pay your £100 fine within a week, dropping it to £60 - still enough to make any dog owner's tail droop.
As Hackney Council notes in their consultation documents, "The vast majority of dog owners act responsibly, keeping their dogs under control." However, they're still seeing enough incidents to warrant keeping these rules firmly in place. Don't worry though - if you've got a guide dog or assistance dog, you're exempt from many of these restrictions.
